'The Beaten Track' documentary

The Beaten Track’ documentary will follow Australian based professional percussionist and percussion teacher Matt Stonehouse through some of the most culturally rich and musically vibrant countries on earth to trace the origins of the explosive world of Middle Eastern percussion music. Matt's journey will follow the evolution of drum cultures found in these vast regions, meeting important performers and makers of various drums found in the Middle East, as well as exploring the vast range of important regional styles and techniques that make up these wonderful musical cultures.

Whilst the series will appeal greatly to musicians of all styles the aim will be to show the colour, vibrancy and character of each country to a wider audience. Many people are fascinated by the Arabian Peninsula and Middle East yet have very little knowledge of what these countries are actually like.

The unique  aim of this series is to take a mainstream Western audience on a special journey into the heart of Middle Eastern and Central Asian cultures through the eyes of a Western musician who is fascinated by the explosive and hypnotically uplifting world of Eastern drumming cultures. It is through these eyes that audiences will be welcomed into new villages, share food, festivities and wonderful drumming music with new faces and have the personal honour of meeting for the first time some of the most important personalities behind the current scene of percussion music in this world.
